  • I feel like I don’t belong or fit in anywhere.
  • I’ve been in church all my life but want a change.
  • Is there a life after Church or faith community?
  • I feel lost.
  • I have a lot of doubts about my religion.
  • I don’t know who to talk to, I have a lot of unanswered questions.

  • I’m put off by modern Church or faith community and feel like a spectator rather than a participant.
  • I feel guilty for wanting to leave Church or faith community.
  • I feel that I’m being disloyal, critical or selfish because I am struggling with feelings of frustration and discouragement about Church or faith community.

If you have been avoiding these thoughts or ones like it, but can’t get away from them- get in touch and let's have a conversation.

Get in touch

“Faith and doubt go hand in hand, they are complementaries. One who never doubts will never truly believe.”

Hermann Hesse

Are you happy in your church or spiritual home? Or are you wondering what it’s all about? When you sing the songs and hymns, do you struggle with some of the language? Or are you grateful for the affirmation of your faith?

What do you fear might happen if you were to leave your church or faith community?

Do you wonder if you could survive by yourself or worry that you would lose friends?

What would the Creator think about you if you left the church?

These thoughts can cause you to feel overwhelmed, deflated, anxious, frustrated and uncertain.

Seeking answers from your pastor etc. might feel difficult, it might even feel like you are asking for a divorce!

As a spiritual counsellor, I can offer a space for you to think about your faith.

You may have started going to a church because it gave your life meaning. But increasingly it feels restrictive and complicated. Talking with me gives you an opportunity to think about what being a what being a Christian or religious believer might mean.

If you come and see me, I won’t offer to pray with you or for you. Nor light a candle for you. I will invite you to think about your inner world.

I can reassure you that doubt isn’t the opposite of faith; it is an element of faith. In my experience “doubts” are too often seen as something dangerous and to be avoided. I invite you to come with your doubts and together we can explore your questions and feelings and a confidential and non-judgemental space.

Client story

"I'm glad he was there when I needed someone. The space he provides is one of pretty much accepting everything and working through it with you. Terry is helping me to express more and by doing so discover more, bit by bit. I would recommend Terry to anyone."

OUR FOCUS

Explore your thoughts and feelings so that you are free to have a fulfilling spiritual/thought life.

I will help you untangle your doubts, fears and emotions leaving you feeling more understood and fulfilled.

Your Circumstances

Perhaps you are feeling unsettled in your church.

Maybe it has become more of a habit than a conscious choice, or it has been something you ‘have always done’.

Are you finding things ‘narrow-minded’ and wish to explore a more liberal approach to your faith?

You may possibly feel that your life style doesn’t ‘fit’ in your faith community.

For whatever reasons, you no longer feel at home with your current spirituality and want to change. Together we can try and see what this new home might look like.

Your Thoughts

The first part of our journey would be to explore the thoughts you are now having. To look at how they have changed over time. And what this might mean for you. Hopefully our spiritual beliefs grow and change over time in the same way as do our physical bodies.

The clothes that fitted us as 10 year olds are not the ones that fit us now! The same is true in our spiritual life. Together we can look at your “spiritual wardrobe” and decide what still fits and what doesn’t!

Your Feelings

Your feelings may be quite intense or confused just now.

That is ok! That’s why you are here.

Very few of us have been taught how to understand our feelings. Too often they feel like distant relatives and not intimate friends.

You have your faith (or chose your faith) because you wanted to be part of something, to believe in something bigger than yourself. Or it has been something you have grown up in, and at one point left you feeling fulfilled.

Now you may be feeling a range of emotions. Or, more accurately, a storm of emotions leaving you feeling lost, confused and angry.

Together we will help you find a way through these storms and eventually find a safe harbour.

The Results

In Counselling for the Soul, the emphasis is on the whole person, on wholeness. Assisting you to find inner balance and harmony. Providing you with the space to be seen and heard so that you can integrate all the dimensions of self into your daily life and spirituality.

Counselling may be helpful in many ways. Sometimes two or three sessions can be enough. For others more time might be needed. There is no “ideal length”. Like the clothes we buy-no one size fits all.

For other people the problems are much more deep seated and will need longer term work and may want more time. There is no ideal length of treatment.

Our time spent talking within the counselling sessions gives you the freedom to do this without judgement or prejudice. Hopefully this will leave you feeling more confident; more in control of your life and your feelings, leaving you more whole.

Counselling with Soul, with Terry Burridge

As a spiritual counsellor I can offer a space for you to think about your faith. I have a background in both theology and counselling, which is a powerful combination when thinking about our spirituality. I spent 30 years in the NHS as a psychiatric nurse, trying to help people find a better quality of life for themselves. Now I focus my time on helping minds and souls to heal. As a counsellor, university lecturer and mental health nurse I believe that many of the things that shape us are hidden from our conscious minds.

Like an iceberg, much of our life is below the surface but nonetheless has a huge influence on us. Counselling for the soul gives you a space to talk with me about things in your life that don’t make sense, or that make you sad, angry, confused, frustrated, or afraid.

Our inner world is like an iceberg. 9/10 hidden below the surface. But still very influential! Talking with me will help you to recognise these icebergs and avoid them until it feels possible to break them up into something less dangerous.

I am a Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, which means that I subscribe to a code of ethics and have done a recognised professional training.

Why it's time to talk to a counsellor rather than ‘carry on carrying on’ living with inner turmoil.

You feel like you’ve tried everything to fit in but something still doesn’t feel quite right…

When you contact me, we will agree when to have an initial assessment session. This session allows us both to decide if this kind of work will be helpful for you.

This may be the first time you have been able to sit and talk honestly and openly with somebody.

If we agree that counselling will help you, then we can arrange weekly sessions.

Together, in a non-judgemental and comfortable space, we are going to uncover a lot about your current beliefs to work out your way forward.

Our work together will unpack:

  • Self-judgement
  • Self-confidence
  • Self-belief
  • Self-worth
  • Self-sabotage
  • Self-care
  • Self-love

The result you can hope to achieve from spiritual counselling is to feel confident in your own faith: self empowered, heard, understood, relieved and free.

Client story

Terry was exactly what I needed in a therapist. Terry helped me unpick the old, outmoded coping mechanisms I had used to survive since a child and now I understand myself in a way I never thought possible.

The sessions were challenging but Terry’s professionalism and understanding allowed me to be exposed in safety and to be contained.

Terry helped me grown in a way no other therapist has and I am forever grateful to have found him when I was ready to.

I spent over a year working on myself with Terry’s guidance and I would return to him in a heartbeat if I needed to. If you are ready to be brave, I cannot recommend Terry highly enough.

Frequent Questions

  • I feel guilty talking about this, is that ok?

You will probably have lots of different feelings as we begin to think and talk about your faith. Some of the work will be to understand where these feelings come from and where they fit in your life.

  • What can I expect?

You can expect some challenging questions! You can expect some new thoughts and insights. But in an environment that is safe and secure.

  • What is Counselling for the Soul?

Counselling for the soul is my way of characterising thinking about your inner world and allowing you a space to think and talk about your spirituality- however you define that!

  • I’m nervous about saying some of my thoughts aloud

It can be uncomfortable at times hearing yourself say out loud those thoughts that you didn’t necessarily know you thought! But that’s the point of therapy. To help us know what we didn’t know we knew!
